The RV Breakdown Calendar: what fails in which month

We read the dates on 59,738 Google reviews of 6,975 RV repair shops and mobile techs, and counted which systems owners wrote about each month. Furnace complaints run at 2.4 times their yearly average in January; A/C complaints nearly double in July.

Key findings

  • Furnaces are a winter story. Furnace and no-heat mentions in January run at 2.4x their monthly average, and fall to 15% of average in July.
  • A/C failures peak in July at 1.9x average, and stay above average from May through September.
  • November is frozen-pipe month. Plumbing, water pump and winterizing mentions jump to 1.9x average in November, right after the first hard freezes.
  • Slide-outs peak in October (1.4x average) as owners close up for the season, and water heaters peak the same month.
  • Electrical and battery trouble is the most common complaint overall (6.6% of all reviews), with a January bump when batteries sit in the cold.

The calendar

Each row is one system. Darker cells mean owners mentioned that system more often than usual in that month, compared with the system's own average across the year. Because each system is compared with itself, a rarer problem like a furnace failure can show a stronger season than a common one like electrical trouble.

What it means for owners

Book the work before the season, not during it. Shops fill up when everyone's furnace quits on the same cold weekend, so a heat check in October costs less waiting than a repair in January. The same goes for the roof air before Memorial Day.

  • September to October: test the furnace and water heater, check slide-out seals and lube the mechanism before you close up. Find RV furnace repair or water heater repair near you.
  • October to November: winterize before the first hard freeze. A blown-out line costs far less than a cracked fitting. See RV winterization services.
  • March to April: de-winterize, check the roof seals and run the A/C once before it's 90 degrees out. Shops that do RV A/C repair book out by June.
  • Before long summer trips: tires, brakes and bearings. Tire and brake service is the most common running-gear job in the reviews.
  • Any time the rig sits: keep the batteries on a maintainer. Electrical and battery trouble is the single most common thing owners write about.

How we did this

  • We took every Google review with text for the 6,975 RV repair shops and mobile techs in our directory: 59,738 reviews dated 2009 to October 2026, most of them from 2024 to 2026.
  • Each review was dated by its Google timestamp and matched against keyword patterns for twelve systems (for example "furnace", "no heat" or "heating problem" for Furnace & heat). One review can mention several systems.
  • For each system and month we took the share of that month's reviews that mention it, divided by the system's average monthly share, and multiplied by 100. This removes the spring and summer surge in review volume. 18,875 reviews named at least one system.
  • Months are pooled across years. Reviews come from every US state, so the winter peaks are driven by northern and mountain states; southern owners see a weaker furnace season.
  • We don't treat reviews as proof that a part failed, and we don't name shops.

Questions people ask

When do RV furnaces break most often?

In our data, furnace and no-heat complaints peak in January at 2.4 times their yearly average, with December and November close behind. Testing the furnace in early fall avoids the winter rush at repair shops.

What month do RV air conditioners fail?

July. A/C mentions in July reviews run at 1.9 times their average and stay high from May through September, which is also when shops have the longest waits for A/C work.

What is the most common RV repair?

Electrical and battery problems were the most mentioned system in our review data, in 6.6% of all reviews, followed by roof leaks and water damage (5.7%) and tires, brakes and bearings (4.8%).

When should I winterize my RV?

Before the first hard freeze where the rig is stored. In our data, plumbing, frozen-line and winterizing mentions almost double in November, which suggests many owners winterize too late.
